The Belt That Keeps Layers Aligned
Every Cartesian 3D printer moves its print head and bed with timing belts. The X and Y axes run GT2 belts over pulleys on the stepper motors, and the accuracy of those belts is what keeps layers aligned. When prints start showing layer shift, ghosting, or banding, the belts are usually the first suspects — and often the cause.
Which Belt Your Printer Uses
Almost all consumer and prosumer printers use GT2 (2GT) belts, 6 mm wide, with fiberglass tension members. Some heavier printers step up to 9-10 mm GT2 or GT3. The pitch is 2 mm — that is the number that must match the pulleys.

Sizing a Replacement Belt
- Width: measure the old belt (most printers: 6 mm)
- Pitch: 2 mm for GT2 — verify by measuring tooth spacing with a caliper
- Length: for each axis, measure the belt path around both pulleys and the carriage anchors, then order open-ended slightly longer and cut to fit
Open-ended GT2 is sold per meter. A typical printer axis uses 300-600 mm of belt per axis. Order 2 meters and you can replace both X and Y axes with margin.
Tensioning Printer Belts
Printer belts are tensioned by moving the motor or the idler mount. The practical test:
- Pluck the belt like a guitar string — it should produce a low, musical note, not a floppy thud
- Press the belt at mid-span — it should deflect about 1-1.5% of the span
- Over-tensioned: stepper motors overheat, prints show artifacts from motor strain
- Under-tensioned: layer shift and ghosting from skipped teeth
Re-check tension after the first few prints — new belts seat and loosen slightly.
Layer Shift and Ghosting: Belt or Not?

If layer shift happens on one axis only, that axis’s belt is the problem. Replace the belt before chasing stepper or firmware settings.
Replacing Printer Belts: The Steps
- Loosen the motor mount or idler on the affected axis
- Remove the old belt from the carriage anchors
- Cut the new GT2 belt to length with a sharp blade, square ends
- Anchor one end to the carriage, route over both pulleys, anchor the other end
- Tension by moving the motor/idler, then tighten
- Print a calibration cube and check for layer shift
Belt Maintenance for Printers
- Check tension monthly on daily-use printers
- Keep belts clean — dust on the teeth causes skips (a dry brush works; no solvents on PU)
- Inspect teeth for wear when you replace nozzles — worn belts cause artifacts you might misdiagnose as extrusion problems
- Replace belts in pairs (X and Y) so wear is even
Buying Printer Belt: What to Order
- GT2 6 mm open-ended — the universal printer belt
- Order 2 m for a typical printer (both axes)
- GT2 pulleys only if you are replacing pulleys too — match the bore to your stepper shaft (5 mm common)
