Why These Lines Run on Timing Belts

Packaging and food processing machines are the heaviest users of synchronous belts in industry. The reasons are the same on every line: sync (stations must act in exact sequence), cleanliness (no oil, nothing to contaminate product), and uptime (a line stopped is money lost). A timing belt delivers all three.

Packaging Machines: The HTD 8M Workhorse

Most packaging machines — cartoners, wrappers, labelers, fillers, palletizers — run HTD 8M belts on their main and auxiliary drives. The 8 mm pitch carries real torque, the curvilinear teeth engage quietly, and the endless construction runs maintenance-free for years.

Key requirement: sync. In a cartoner, the product, the carton, and the folding head must meet at the same point every cycle. A timing belt’s positive engagement guarantees it — which is why these machines do not use V-belts on critical drives.

Food Processing: Wash-Down Resistance

Food lines add one requirement packaging lines do not have: chemical wash-down. Every shift, the line gets cleaned with caustic or chlorine-based detergents and hot water. Standard rubber belts degrade in that environment. The answer is food-grade polyurethane (FDA-compliant):

  • Resists caustic and chlorine cleaning chemicals
  • No oil or lubricant to contaminate product
  • Runs clean, sheds no particles
  • Available in food-contact grades where the belt touches product

Selecting Belts for a New Line

  1. Pitch by torque: HTD 8M for most line drives, 14M for heavy transfer, 5M for light indexing
  2. Width by load: continuous-duty lines size width for peak acceleration, not just running load
  3. Material by environment: standard PU for dry packaging, food-grade PU for wash-down zones
  4. Length by center distance: endless lengths, whole teeth × pitch
  5. Tension member: fiberglass standard, aramid for start-stop duty (fillers and cartoners start/stop constantly)

Maintenance for Continuous-Duty Lines

A timing belt is maintenance-free by design — no re-tensioning, no lubrication. What keeps the line up:

  • Inspect monthly: check teeth for wear, edges for fraying, pulleys for groove wear
  • Re-tension after first shift: new belts seat; check tension once, then quarterly
  • Replace pulleys with belts: a new belt on worn pulleys fails fast — replace the pair
  • Keep spares: for a 24/7 line, a spare belt + pulleys on the shelf is insurance against a long stop
  • Document the change: log belt changes by date and machine — wear patterns reveal alignment problems early

Why Lines Convert from Chain to Belt

Food and packaging lines increasingly convert chain drives to timing belts: no lubrication (cleaner), no elongation (constant sync), quieter (better working environment), and no periodic re-tensioning. Retrofit kits replace sprockets with pulleys and the chain with an endless belt — usually at a fraction of the maintenance cost over the machine’s life.
