  • Fixed (Manual) Tensioners A slot, cam, or eccentric that moves one pulley to set belt tension at installation. Simple, cheap, and standard on most industrial drives. The maintenance rule: set tension at install, re-check after the first shift, then monthly.
  • Spring-Loaded Tensioners A spring keeps constant force on the belt, absorbing stretch and thermal changes automatically. Used on drives where tension must stay consistent (high-speed belts, long spans) or where access for manual adjustment is hard. The spring force must be matched to the belt — too strong over-tensions, too weak lets the belt go slack.
  • Weighted/Dead-Weight Tensioners A gravity arm applies constant tension. Seen on heavy drives (large conveyors, mill drives) where spring force cannot hold.
