Two Curvilinear Profiles, Two Different Jobs
HTD and GT2 belts both use rounded, curvilinear teeth — but they sit at opposite ends of the motion-control spectrum. GT2 is a fine-pitch belt built for light, high-resolution motion. HTD is a torque belt built for power transmission. The difference in pitch is the whole story: GT2’s 2 mm pitch buys resolution; HTD’s 5-14 mm pitch buys load capacity.

What the Tooth Profiles Do Differently
Both profiles are curvilinear, meaning the tooth face curves into the pulley groove. But:
- GT2 teeth are smaller and closer together. More teeth in engagement on a small pulley means finer positioning resolution and lower vibration at light loads.
- HTD teeth are deeper and larger. Each tooth engages a bigger pulley surface, so the belt transmits more torque before the teeth shear or skip.
A GT2 belt on an HTD pulley (or the reverse) will not work: the pitches do not match, and the teeth will skip within a few revolutions.
Application Fit: Which Belt Where
3D Printers and Laser Cutters: GT2
Cartesian printers move light carriages at moderate speeds with high repeatability. A 6 mm GT2 belt over a 20-tooth pulley gives the resolution that keeps print layers aligned. Layer shift on a printer is almost always a worn GT2 belt or a loose one.
Linear Actuators and Gantries: GT2 or HTD 5M
Light gantries and desktop actuators run GT2. Heavier gantries and industrial actuators step up to HTD 5M with steel tension members — the extra width and deeper teeth carry the moving mass without stretch.
Packaging and General Power Transmission: HTD 8M
When the job is transmitting power — packaging machines, conveyors, pumps — HTD 8M is the default. It carries real torque, runs quiet, and never needs lubrication. If you are converting a chain or V-belt drive, 8M is the usual starting point.
Heavy Industrial Drives: HTD 14M
Pumps, compressors, large conveyors, and 24/7 lines use 14M. At this scale the belt replaces chains and gears with a maintenance-free synchronous drive.
Which Belt Is “Better”?
Neither is better — they are sized for different jobs. The practical question is what the drive needs:
- Load: If the belt is under-sized, the teeth skip or the cords stretch. Match torque capacity to the load.
- Resolution: If positioning accuracy matters, smaller pitch (GT2) wins where load allows.
- Existing drive: If you are replacing a belt, match the existing pitch exactly. That is the only rule that is not a trade-off.
- Environment: Polyurethane for wash-down and food, rubber for hot service — independent of pitch.
Can I Replace a GT2 Belt with HTD or Vice Versa?
No. The tooth pitch and profile must match the pulley. A GT2 pulley has 2 mm grooves; an HTD 5M pulley has 5 mm grooves. Changing pitch means changing both pulleys and the belt — and usually the center distance too.
Buying Advice
- For printers and light axes: stick with GT2, 6 mm wide, fiberglass core. Match the belt length to your axis (measure center-to-center and add the wrap allowance).
- For actuators and light industrial: HTD 5M, 15-25 mm wide, steel core for precision or fiberglass for economy.
- For power transmission: HTD 8M or 14M, width sized to the motor power. Send us the motor specs and we will size it.
