Timing Belt Noise

The Sound Is a Diagnosis
A timing belt is one of the quieter drive options when it runs right — which is why noise is usually the first sign of a problem. The type of sound narrows the cause faster than any test:

| Rattling at startup | Loose belt seating into worn pulley grooves |
Clicking and Tapping: Tooth Engagement Problems
A regular click per revolution means the teeth are not seating cleanly in the pulley grooves. Three causes:
- Pitch mismatch — a 5M belt on 8M pulleys (or HTD teeth in trapezoidal grooves) skips and clicks within a few revolutions. Confirm the pitch before installing.
- Worn teeth or worn pulleys — rounded or chipped teeth, or pulley grooves worn deeper than spec, change the engagement geometry. If the belt is new and clicking, inspect the pulleys.
- Debris in the grooves — a particle caught between belt and pulley clicks once per revolution. Clean both and re-check.
Squealing and Chirping: Slip and Glaze
Timing belts do not normally slip — that is their advantage. When one squeals:
- Glazing happens when a belt has been slipping (usually from under-tension) long enough to polish the teeth. The belt is no longer gripping; replace it.
- Misalignment makes the belt ride against the pulley flange, producing a chirp at the flange contact. Check that the pulleys are in the same plane with a straightedge.
- Wrong profile under load — an over-loaded belt can momentarily lose engagement and squeal under peak torque. This is a sizing problem: wider belt or bigger pitch.
Humming and Whirring: Tension and Resonance
A constant hum at speed usually means the belt is over-tensioned, loading the motor and driven bearings. Reduce tension to spec and re-check. If the hum persists, the noise may be the bearings, not the belt — a belt that is too tight wears bearings fast.
Long belts can also resonate with the drive frequency, amplifying a hum. An idler placed to shorten the free span changes the resonant frequency and usually stops it.
Slapping and Flapping: Under-Tension
A loose belt slaps the pulleys on the slack side, especially at startup and stop. Re-tension to spec (see the Tension Guide). On long spans, add an idler or support to keep the belt from flapping — flapping accelerates tooth wear even if tension is otherwise fine.
Misalignment: The Silent Killer
Most persistent belt noise traces to misaligned pulleys. Check:
- Parallel alignment — the two pulley shafts must be parallel (within 0.5 mm per 100 mm of span is a practical target).
- Plane alignment — both pulleys must sit in the same plane; a straightedge across both faces should touch everywhere.
- Flange contact — the belt should run centered, not riding one flange.
Misalignment also causes the belt to wander, which wears the edges and produces a consistent rubbing sound. Fix the alignment, not the belt.
Diagnose Before You Replace
The sequence that saves the most money: (1) confirm the pitch is right, (2) check alignment, (3) check tension, (4) inspect teeth and pulleys for wear, (5) clean the grooves. Replace the belt only after 1-4 check out — a new belt on a misaligned drive fails fast and makes the same noise.
When It Is Not the Belt
If the belt is new, aligned, and tensioned to spec but still noisy, listen around the drive: the motor bearings, gearbox, and driven machine can all hum at the same frequency. Belt noise is rhythmic with belt speed; bearing noise is rhythmic with shaft speed. Count the frequency — a click per belt revolution is the belt, a click per shaft revolution may be the bearing.
Preventing Noise on a New Drive
- Buy the right pitch and width for the load (an under-sized belt runs at the edge of its capacity and hunts)
- Align pulleys during installation, not after
- Tension to spec, re-check after the first shift
- Use flanged pulleys where tracking is critical, self-tracking belts where it is not
