Diagnose the Cause, Not Just the Symptom

Most timing belt failures look like belt failures but are actually system failures: misalignment, wrong sizing, or a worn pulley. Replacing the belt without fixing the cause buys you a few months — the new belt fails the same way. This guide walks the 10 most common problems from symptom to root cause to fix.

1. Belt Skips / Loses Sync Under Load

Symptom: position error, layer shift, product spacing drift — usually at startup or peak load.

  • Clicking = tooth engagement problem (pitch mismatch, worn teeth, debris)
  • Squealing = slip/glaze (usually under-tension) or misalignment
  • Humming = over-tension (bearing load)
  • Slapping = under-tension or long unsupported span

3. Belt Wears on One Edge

Symptom: frayed edge on one side only.

Misaligned pulleys Straightedge across pulley faces Realign (within 0.5 mm/100 mm)
Shaft deflection Motor or driven shaft bends under load Reinforce mount
Flange contact Belt riding one flange Adjust flange position or alignment

4. Belt Teeth Cracked or Chipped

Symptom: missing or damaged teeth, usually on one side.

The Troubleshooting Order That Works

  1. Verify pitch match (cheapest check, most common cause of clicks and skips)
  2. Check alignment (straightedge across both pulley faces)
  3. Check tension (deflection test)
  4. Inspect teeth and grooves (wear on belt and pulleys)
  5. Confirm material vs environment (heat, chemicals, wash-down)
  6. Check sizing (width/pitch vs load and duty)

Fix the cause, then replace the belt. A correctly diagnosed belt drive runs for years; a misdiagnosed one fails repeatedly.
